ESGN, German physicians collaborate to tackle endometriosis

By Sola Ogundipe

THE Endometriosis Support Group of Nigeria, ESGN, is collaborating with the German Endometriosis Scientific Research Foundation, GESRF, and Nordica Fertility Centre, Lagos, towards intensifying efforts to enhance the  early diagnosis, treatment and prevention of endometriosis – an abnormal growth of endometrial cells in a location outside of the uterus.

PHYSICIAN’S ROUNDTABLE: From left: Specialist in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Prof. Klaus Neis; Chairman of the Scientific Endometriosis Foundation, Prof. Klaus Buhler; Founder, ESGN, Dr Abayomi Ajayi and Clinic Manager, Nordica Lagos, Mrs Tola Ajayi during this year’s ESGN’s Physicians’ Rountable in Lagos.

Speaking in Lagos recently on Surgical Management of Endometriosis during this year’s Physicians’ Rountable organised by the ESGN, with the theme: Current Diagnosis & Management of Endometriosis, Prof. Klaus Neis, a specialist in Obstetrics  & Gynaecology, Founder of European Training Centre (for Gynaecology, Endoscopy & Surgery), said about 20 per cent of all women have endometriosis.

“The problem in African countries is that it is not so effective as outside, because of the cost, laparoscopy is costly.

Speaking on Medical Mangement of Endometriosis, the Vice- Chairman of the Scientific Endometriosis Foundation, Prof. Klaus Buhler, said endometriosis affects many women and causes pain.

“They are not able to have children so we need to make the diagnosis as early as possible and we should also perform laparoscopic surgery earlier than we are doing  currently.”

Buhler said in the last 10-20 years, scientists have learned how to perform laparoscopic surgeries and now know that it is the solution in most young women.

“Twenty years ago, I also did not know what was endometriosis, but over time, I got to know. There is need for laparoscopic education and this year,  effort is on to bring all this information on board from the college and that is what we will support and that is our task.”

Obstetrician/gynaecologist and Founder, ESGN, Dr Abayomi Ajayi who spoke on Fertility Preservation in Endometriosis, said endometriosis is often misdiagnosed leading to delays in treatment, sometimes for several years. “The surest way to diagnose endometriosis is by laparoscopy and the goals of endometriosis treatment may include pain relief and/or enhancement of fertility.

Ajayi who is also Medical Director, Nordica Fertility Centre, Lagos, Abuja & Asaba, however, said sometimes the condition can resolve on its own. “Menstrual periods should not be painful to the extent it disturbs you from your normal activities, if you have painful menses, see your doctor.”

May Day: Democratic People’s Congress salutes Nigerian workers

Abuja – Democratic People’s Congress (DPC) on Monday joined millions of Nigerians to felicitate with patriotic Nigerian work force on the occasion of this year’s May Day celebration on May 1.

The felicitation is in a statement by the congress National Chairman, Rev. Olusegun Peters in Abuja.

Peters said Nigerian workers were the best in Africa and among the best in the world.

According to him, workers are the pride of the nation whose exceptional resilience, patriotism, intellectual ability, managerial acumen, tenacity and sagacity of purpose stabilised the polity.

The chairman said workers had been directing the ship of Nigeria to the path of rectitude, progress and development.

He added that “Nigerian workers demonstrated their love for their fatherland in the struggle for independence where they resisted British colonial masters through calculated industrial actions.

“The workers opposed obnoxious military decrees and actions that undermined the wellbeing of Nigerian people and unity of the nation which ushered in democratic freedom which the citizenry enjoy today.

“DPC identifies with the Nigerian workers in our collective efforts at building strong, virile, progressive, prosperous and decent democratic society.

“Nigerian workers have contributed to the growth of the nation in spite of challenges: it is time to protect and reward the workers in tandem with Section 14(2) b of the 1999 constitution (as amended).

“The section provides that the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government.’’

Peters called on Federal Government to approve the Nigerian Labour Congress’ proposed new minimum wage and reflect same in the 2018 appropriate bill being considered by the National Assembly.

According to him, civil servants in the country work hard but earn little and owe so much.

He said “the current minimum wage of N18,000 is not applicable today due to high cost of living that has made life unbearable for most Nigerians, particularly civil servants.’’

He noted that the free fall of the Naira in foreign exchange market contributed to the economic woes of the nation and called for incentives to boost workers’ morale.

He urged state governments to pay outstanding salary arrears owed workers this month in preparation for the take-off of the new minimum wage.

According to him, the era of owing workers while top public office holders live in luxury from looted funds is over. (NAN)

Messi makes another La Liga history

Lionel Messi set another record in his glittering Barcelona career after becoming the first player to score 30 goals or more in seven different seasons in La Liga.

Messi

The Argentine superstar reached the milestone for the 2017-18 season by scoring a hat-trick at the Riazor as Ernesto Valverde’s wrapped up the title with a 4-2 win.

His 30th goal of the campaign arrived on 38 minutes when Luis Suarez crossed to the far post and Messi was in prime position to volley home to give Barca a 2-0 lead after Philippe Coutinho had scored an early opener.

Barcelona were crowned 2017/18 LaLiga champions thanks to Sunday evening’s 4-2 win at Deportivo La Coruña – with Blaugrana star Lionel Messi seeing them home with his fourth hat-trick of the LaLiga campaign.

The result also saw Ernesto Valverde’s team complete an eighth domestic double the week after their 5-0 Copa del Rey final win over Sevilla and move to within three games of becoming the first team to ever complete an entire LaLiga campaign unbeaten, though that will be tested when Real Madrid visit the Camp Nou for Sunday’s LaLiga El Clasico clash.

Champions League: Real target title to over shadow Barca’s domestic double

Real Madrid captain, Sergio Ramos believes winning the Champions League would top Barcelona’s domestic double.

Fierce rivals Barca wrestled the LaLiga title back from Real at the weekend with four games to spare having already lifted the Copa del Rey.

Ramos and his team-mates have endured a difficult league season, although they have the chance to make amends with another European success.

The Madrid club are aiming for a fourth Champions League title in five seasons and, ahead of Tuesday’s semi-final second leg against Bayern Munich, Spain defender Ramos believes that achievement would be superior to Barca’s.

“Barca have had a great year, they have won two titles; winning the cup has merit and the league even more,” said Ramos at his pre-match press conference, according to Marca.

“Winning the Champions League is a positive that is equivalent to those two or even more.

“For me it would be two great seasons, theirs and ours “.

Real, winners of the competition in 2014, 2016 and 2017, are firm favourites to make the Kiev final having won 2-1 in Germany last week.

Opponents Bayern were the last team to win the competition three years in a row – during the 1970s – and Ramos says he is driven by the chance to make history.

“I give importance to everything, we are making the impossible easy,” he added.

“It seems easy that we could win three in a row, that motivates us in the day to day to keep breaking records.

“Maybe we give it the value it has tomorrow. “

Man United vs Arsenal: Iwobi suffers hamstring injury

Super Eagles forward, Alex Iwobi has added to Gernot Rohr’s worries after suffering a hamstring injury in Sunday’s premier league clash against Manchester United.

Iwobi

Iwobi was on for the entire duration of the match which was also Arsene Wenger’s last game at Old Trafford.

Wenger confirmed the 21-year-old’s injury during his post-match conference.

“I took off Mkhitaryan because he had a little knock on his knee again, on the same knee – we could see that just looking at him in the dressing room,” the Frenchman stated.

“Ospina has a rib problem and Alex Iwobi has a hamstring problem, so we’ll see how well everyone recovers. Thursday will come very quickly.

” Definitely? At the moment, no, but we’ll have to monitor them over the next 48 hours. We’ll know more on Tuesday.”

Iwobi is expected to make Rohr’s final 23-man squad for the world cup starting June 14.

Jailbirds in love: 63 inmates marry in Mexico

With a lot of kissing and tears, Jorge Armando Perez finally tied the knot with his fiancée Corina Chavez at an emotional ceremony inside a prison in Mexico where a total of 63 couples got hitched.

Perez, who has lived his entire life in El Paso, Texas, was deported to Mexico seven months ago to begin serving a 40-year sentence for extortion in a prison just across the border in the northern city of Ciudad Juarez.

– To have, to hold and to visit every week –
And it was there that the 37-year-old met Chavez some three years ago. Together they have been raising six children, four from previous relationships.

Holding his hand to seal their union in front of family members and officials, his 35-year-old wife pledged to visit him each Wednesday and Saturday and “every day possible” at this facility, which houses some 3,100 prisoners.

– ‘She is very beautiful’ –
Others had less time to wait before being reunited with their new spouses, with one bride saying she had two years before her new husband finished a sentence for drug possession.

“We love each other very much, he loves me and I love him and we want to make a life for ourselves outside of here,” she told AFP, declining to give her name.

“She is very beautiful,” beamed the newly-wedded inmate, who had showered his beloved with chocolates, cakes and pictures he himself had made in jail.

– ‘Strengthening the family bond’ –
Through the weddings, local authorities are seeking to give legal security to the partner and children of those inside

“But above all, it strengthens the family bond and the acquisition of values within the family,” said prison director Rene Lopez Ortiz.

2018 Okpekpe Race: Nigerian runners, foreigners to enjoy equal privileges — Ebewele

Brown Ebewele, Technical Director, Okpekpe Road Race, says Nigerian runners will be accorded equal privileges with their foreign counterparts in the 2018 edition of the 10km race.

ON THE GO . . . Participants taking off at the Okpekpe International 10km road

Ebewele, who made the disclosure on Monday in Benin, said there were innovations introduced in the 6th edition of the race that has been upgraded to a Silver Label road race by the IAAF.

“This edition is packed with lots of innovations to leave up to it new status by the World Athletics body.

“Unlike the previous editions, this year’s race will see the top athletes from the country accorded the same privileges like other top runners from Africa.

“Aside being lodged in the same hotel, they will also be accorded every other right the foreign athletes will enjoy.

“Our top 10 athletes will no longer be segregated from the foreign athletes. They will also compete for the same price money,’’ he said.

In the previous editions, Nigerian athletes were solely responsible for their accommodation.

The technical director said that had a way of giving Nigerian athletes sense of belonging, adding that a Local Organising Committee (LOC) has been constituted.

“The Commissioner for Youths and Special Duties in Edo, Micah Amalokhai, will help the organisers to coordinate everything that has to do with organisation of the race.

“To assist him, we also have the Commissioners for Education and that for Environment as members of the LOC,’’ he said.

Ebwele said the organisers would ensure that the organisation of the race conformed to best global practices.

“Movement of security personnel carrying weapons will be restricted and better organised in line with what is obtainable in other parts of the world.

“Unlike in previous races, security personnel will be trained in gun handling in the sports arena.

“We are going to have not only effective security officers during the race, but a well organised one. We do not want to see police officers with open display of guns during the race.

“What I am saying is that we will have security on ground but not with the way they carry guns about as if we are in war, Ebewele said.

“Of course they will carry guns and be around strategic locations, but you will not see them openly displaying their guns.

“Generally, there will be improvement in terms of organisation of the race.

“The Okpekpe race is no longer a bronze label competition, it’s now a silver label, so everything about the race is being done in this regard.’’

The race will hold on May 12 at Okpekpe in Edo. (NAN)

Mancini ‘proud’ if appointed Italy coach

Roberto Mancini said Monday he would be proud to coach Italy but insisted he had not yet had any contact with the Italian Football Federation (FIGC).

Mancini

Zenit Saint Petersburg coach Mancini is seen as the favourite to take over the four-time world champions after Carlo Ancelotti reported

“Am I in pole position to become coach? From St Petersburg it’s difficult to be aware of everything,” Mancini told Italian radio on Monday.

“I personally have never spoken with the federation, but coaching the national team would be prestigious and a source of pride for me because Italy are one of the most important teams in the world.

“If one day I got the chance to sit on the national team’s bench it would be something beautiful, but until now there hasn’t been anything.”

Italy have been without a permanent coach since Gian Piero Ventura was sacked after failing to qualify the Azzurri for the World Cup for the first time in 60 years after losing to Sweden in a two-legged playoff in November.

Mancini travelled to Rome this week and according to reports in Russia the 53-year-old has told Zenit Saint Petersburg players he will be leaving at the end of the season.

“It won’t be the same World Cup (without Italy),” said Mancini, who believes Italian football needs to be rebuilt from grassroots level to return to the glory days.

“I feel that at this time the national team doesn’t have the champions it always had but it has good players.

“You have to be patient. The youth sections of Italian teams have some players who can do well in the national team in the future.”

Mancini led Manchester City to their first English title in 44 years in 2012, and won three Serie A titles with Inter Milan and Italian Cups with Inter, Fiorentina and Lazio.

The former Lazio and Sampdoria forward never became a regular with Italy during his 10-year international career, during which he won 36 caps and scored four goals.

He reached the semi-finals of Euro 1988, and was in the squad that finished third in the 1990 World Cup on home soil.

Italy’s under-21 coach Luigi Di Biagio has been filling the position on an interim basis with the FIGC saying Ventura’s successor will be named on May 20.

Among the other names being touted are Chelsea manager Antonio Conte and former Leicester coach Claudio Ranieri, now in charge of French club Nantes.
