Through sweet talk, the swindlers were able to manipulate the elderly woman into wiring $225,000 to an account. She also sent them additional $60,000 on two instances via packages through a courier service when they set her up for a fake meet-up in Malaysia.
When she arrived in the country she was met by a man who told her he would bring her to her online lover.
She was then brought to a hotel in Puchong and left her there. Her luggage, identification and travel documents were also stolen from her.
When she told the U.S. embassy about her story, the officers there informed her that she might have been a victim of deceptive con artists who were only after her money.
“We watched the premises and when two men came to collect the package on Monday, we arrested them. We seized $30,000, various identification documents, mobile phones, three ATM cards and a car,” he said.
Two Nigerian suspects, aged 26 and 33, were arrested by the authorities in connection with the crime. Report revealed to be on student visas, both suspects have reportedly been staying in Malaysia since 2015.
“We also managed to extract (online) conversations between the suspects and the victim. Based on the scripts, it was evident that they were experts at manipulating victims by sending them sweet and passionate love letters via email,” Mohd Sakri Arifin said.
“Between January and June this year, the amount of losses (through scams) was down to RM 50.5 million ($11.8 million) from RM 53.4 million ($12.5 million), compared to the same period last year,” SAC Mohd Sakri said.
“The number of cases, however, increased from 950 to 1,302 in the same period,” he said, noting that people should be more careful when dealing with strangers online, especially when money is involved.
Buhari distances self from APC law chatter

President Mohammadu Buhari Thursday refuted allegations that he interfered in the affairs of the All Progressives Congress (APC) or matters before the law courts.
President Buhari said it is not in his nature to go against the provisions of the country's constitution let alone his party's constitutional provisions.
The President's denial came amidst mounting allegations that some names of members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Convention Planning Sub-Committees were smuggled in by the Presidency.
Recall that, members of the aggrieved New Peoples' Democratic Party (nPDP) in the APC on Wednesday accused the Presidency of replacing about 50 names from the original list during the inauguration. The protesting APC members said their names were initially on the published convention committee list.
But reacting in a statement signed by Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, the Presidency stated that nothing in the allegation can be further from the truth in every material particular.
It described as disingenuous to attribute every perceived infraction in activities of party or government appointees to the President's desk.
"For the umpteenth time, we wish to reiterate President Muhammadu Buhari’s position that he will not interfere in party affairs or matters before the law courts.
"It ought to have been obvious by now to discerning Nigerians that it is not in the nature of this President to go against the provisions of the country’s constitution let alone his party’s constitutional provisions," the Presidency noted.
